Here's a thought world...

We curtail, or at least use our business with places like Dubai determined to put on their "happy face" to the outside world until their legal system moves out of a hackneyed interpretation of the 7th Century.

A Norwegian woman sentenced to 16 months in jail in Dubai for having sex outside marriage after she reported an alleged rape said Friday she decided to speak out in hopes of drawing attention to the risks of outsiders misunderstanding the Islamic-influenced legal codes in this cosmopolitan city.

The case has drawn outrage from rights groups and others in the West since the 24-year-old interior designer was sentenced Wednesday. It also highlights the increasingly frequent tensions between the United Arab Emirates' international atmosphere and its legal system, which is strongly influenced by Islamic traditions in a nation where foreign workers and visitors greatly outnumber locals.
Oh and there's not a question of whether she lied...her attacked received a prison sentence...of course it was SHORTER than hers.

Dubai's about to implode financially, as it is (the real estate boom there went bust in a big, big way), and the UAE's now-meager oil output isn't going to protect it from financial collapse. Hell, they can't pay for the subway system they bought from Japan, they're not exactly sitting on reserves of fresh water and their sewage system is completely inadequate for the increase in population they've encouraged.

So, a decade or two from now, no one from the west will want to go there, their oil will be gone, and they'll be back to wandering around in the desert, chopping off each other's heads out of spite and aggrieved honor.

If the EU countries stopped issuing visas to the UAE, as a human rights violator, that would pretty much solve this particular problem. I doubt very much that the U.S. would take any such action--too many U.S. banks with tight ties to the UAE (remember, we'll do anything for money). Nor would the U.S. do anything which might compromise little Erik Prince's arrangements with the UAE.

On the other hand, Dubai says she was drinking, so she had it coming.

Seventh century? Sounds a lot like the local police department.

And then there is our own 7th century:

"A Florida woman who fired warning shots against her allegedly abusive husband has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. "

The whole planet if full of nuts.

"So, a decade or two from now, no one from the west will want to go there, their oil will be gone, and they'll be back to wandering around in the desert, chopping off each other's heads out of spite and aggrieved honor" beats jumping on natives, kill them, and brag about it every year. anywho, many countries survived well without oil. dubai is 80 percent non emirates and the rest of the united emirates are in great economical shape and have way Waaaay less non emirates.
back at you, don't trust your butt crack with that type of information.
